We start by taking the early train from Málaga to Álora. The train takes half an hour, and leaves you well clear of the industrial zone of the Guadalhorce, and the traffic which you inevitably find there. From Álora station we turn right andclimb up to the town centre. Follow signs to El Chorro for 14kms. The road surface is even but not dangerous, and there is little traffic. Look out for the aquaduct diasappearing into the rock face after 10kms or so:

After 14kms, we arrive at El Chorro reservoir. The first stop of the day is another 2kms straight ahead. Look out for the deteriorating road surface a this point.

El defiladero siempre impresiona, tal como el caminito del Rey.

The Ravine, and the remains of the tiny walkway running half way up the vertical rock face always take my breath away. Watch out for the Griffon Vultures which can usually be seen wheeling overhead.

Ahora el asphalto está en mejor estado, dejando El Chorro detrás, y subiendo lentamente hácia Ardales. Después de 3km, se puede desviar para visitar las ruinas de Bobastro; lo que queda de un pueblo mozárabe, que merece la pena ver.
Destaca también las formaciones geologicas cada lado de la carretera.

After breakfast we climb gently through pine woods on much improved asphalt. After 3kms it can be well worth deviating from the route to visit Bobastro, the ruins of a Mozárabe settlement.
Erosion has left all kinds of weird dome shapes and bowls in the soft rock to either side of the road towards Ardales.

En 2,5kms giramos a la derecha en el cruce, y empezamos la subída hácia Ardales en la M-444. Éste tramo tiene más tráfico y un viento de cara nos complica bastante la subída. En 5kms encontramos la carretera nacional A357, y la cogemos bajando hasta la A-7277 sentido Carratraca. Puede que hay manera de evitar ese tramo.

After the turn to Bobastro we continue to the T-junction in around 2.5kms, and head left on the M-444. Here the traffic can be heavier, and a strong head wind compicated our climb up to Ardales. After 5kms, we join the main road A-357 for a short fast descent until we turn off on to the A-7277, signed Carratraca. This stretch of main road may well be avoidable, but I have yet to explore further.

Volvemos a la carretera de montaña de poco uso por los coches, y pasamos por el pueblo de Carratraca, conocido por su balneario y curioso plaza de toros:

We now rejoin the quiet mountain roads, and head into Carratraca; a small village perched on the hillside, known for it’s Spa and quirky bullring:

Empieza un tramo entre montañas de 20kms. Las vistas aquí merece la dura subída y la A357.

We know have a 20kms stretch of lightly undulating mountain road with views which make the grind well worth it:

Ya de vuelta en Álora, bajamos hácia el río Guadalhorce, y seguimos río abajo pasando por Pizarra en la A-343. Ahora seguimos recto dirección Aljaima en la A-7054 y manteniendo el río a la derecha, bajamos a Málaga por Cartama Estación.

Having completed the loop back in to Álora, we now drop down to the river Guadalhorce which we will follow all the way back in to Málaga. We first pass through Pizarra on the A-343, and then, keeping the river over our right shoulder, straight on to Aljaima, Cartama Estación, and the industrial estates.

Hi, and welcome to the Recyclo Blog. We will be publishing routes, and a few anecdotes here, as well  as information on up and coming events in the area.

Recyclo – Comares – Recyclo 85km

Un día perfecto para la práctica de ciclismo; bastante nubosidad pero nada de lluvia, temperaturas entre 15ºC y 20ºC y algo como 1300m de subida hacia la Arxaquia. Hoy somos cinco, y yo, el más viejo y el más lento, pero con diferencia.

Salimos en direccíon El Palo, y en 2km giramos a la izquierda por la carretera de Olías. Empieza la subida y llegamos a 440m de altitud en 9,5km. Seguimos subiendo otros 9,2km hasta el punto alto de la ruta: 840m, y una parada para tomar aire, y para mirar atrás a la carretera conquistada.

Hasta aquí la mayoría de la ruta será la que seguirán los profesionales el día 30 de agosto en La Vuelta, aunque al revés.

Ahora empieza una bajada que arranca muy rápida, pero el mal estado del asfalto nos tiene frenando con cuidado y concentrándonos al máximo. El camino hacia Comares, nos lleva otra vez arriba, y después de otros 8,3km subimos la rampa que te deja en la plaza del pueblo, y la terraza más bonita de todas. Aquí es imprescindible parar para un mollete y un cafelito.

Volvemos a bajar del pueblo, y en el cruce, giramos a la izquierda hacia Benamargosa. Ahora el asflato está en mucho mejor estado, y bajamos a tope entre plantaciones de aguacates. Precuación después de 6km, aquí giramos a la derecha en el cruce. Hay un desague con aperturas verticales, y lo suficientemente anchas para pillar una rueda. Hay que cruzar con ángulo y prudencia.

Ahora la carretera baja y sube unos 5,3km hasta Benamargosa. Aquí, los más osados pueden tomar la ruta hacia Cútar, que sube otra vez hasta 700m o por allí, pero yo no estoy para tanto trote, así que seguimos hacia la costa.

En 7,8km llegamos al cruce con la A356. Giramos a la derecha, y cogemos el carril de la izquierda, para coger la carretera secundaria hacia Velez-Málaga. Seguimos los señales para Torre del Mar, y emprendemos el camino a casa por la N340.  Son unos 35km de carretera llana, con poco tránsito.

Cuando averigue una manera de subir la ruta desde Google Maps, lo haré.

A perfect day for cycling. Plenty of cloud cover early on, and no rain with light winds. Temperatures of between 15ºC and 20ºC, and a little over 1300m of climbing ahead.  Today there are five of us, and I am by far the oldest and unfittest on this occasion.

We leave the shop and head East into El Palo. After 2km, we take a left turn signed Carretera de Olías. We start climbing straight away, and we reach 440m after 9,5km. We climb out of Olías and keep going up the hill to the high point of the route at 840m, after another 9.2km. At this point we stop to catch our breath, or wait for me in the case of my companions, and enjoy the chance to look back over the route so far.

Most of the route we have covered so far will be part of stage four of la Vuelta de España on Monday 30th August 2010. Although the pros will be doing it twice, and in the opposite direction.

The descent starts very quickly but the road surface soon deteriorates and we find ourselves braking hard and concentrating harder!  The road to Comares soon has us climbing again, and after 8.3km we turn left, up a steep ramp which leads to the village plaza which has unbeatable views out over the valley and the distant coast, and also one of the nicest terrace cafés around. Mollete or bread roll and coffee are a must at this point.

We head back down the hill, and at the junction, turn left and head  towards Benamargosa. The roads are in perfect condition and we fly down into the valley with avocado plantations either side. After 6km there is a hazardous drain which crosses the approach to a T junction. You can easily puncture here if you do not approach slowly and at an angle. We turn right and head into Benamargosa after 5.2km of up and down. At this point, for those riders with plenty of stamina left, a right turn ove rthe bridge leads to another climb up to 700m, and an exciting swoop back in to Málaga. At my prompting, we decided to take the coast road back.

After 7.8km we reach the main road A356, and turn right towards Velez-Málaga. Crossing the main road, we take the secundary road which runs in parallel, and follow signs for Torre del Mar. It’s now a 35km flat coastal route along the N340 back in to town, with light traffic until you reach the outskirts.
